Endocrinology is the study of chemical and hormonal disorders of the human body. Diabetes in all its forms will soon affect 1/3 of all Americans and is the focus of Endocrinology & Metabolism of East Alabama. By joining with East Alabama Health’s Diabetes and Nutrition Center (DANC), Dr. Neil Schaffner and team offer comprehensive education and therapeutic services. We also treat the full spectrum of endocrine problems, from thyroid to lipids to growth disorders and osteoporosis.

Alabama is perpetually in the top three states for prevalence of diabetes, which is now the leading cause of blindness, renal failure, cardiovascular disease, amputations and lost workdays. Many patients come to us long after they have had elevated blood sugars, sometimes for years, and are already showing signs of end-organ disease.

Working with the DANC team, we hope to help identify, educate and treat those affected and at risk. Early interventions have been proven to significantly decrease the rate of progression from pre-diabetes to diabetes and the complications of the disease. Our practice incorporates a full range of interventions, from nutrition therapy to glucose sensors and insulin pumps.
